■ By GEORGE LURIE

Casey Castillo has been named the new CEO at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Castillo, 45, the organization's longtime chief financial officer, had been serving as interim CEO at the Food Bank since Jim Floros stepped down in July 2021. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank's board of directors announced the appointment last week (May 16).

“I am humbled and honored to take on this role at such a significant time when the Food Bank is feeding record numbers and is looking to the community for the resources it needs to continue its vitally important mission,” Castillo said this week. Castillo joined the Food Bank in 2008 as CFO and was subsequently appointed VP of finance and administration. He has more than 20 years of executive, financial and nonprofit management experience. Over the course of his fourteen-year tenure at the Food Bank, he has provided oversight for all financial, administrative, human resources and information technology operations. Castillo has helped lead the hunger-relief organization during periods of severe economic upheaval including the Great Recession and most recently, the COVID-19

pandemic – including the subsequent inflationary environment which is currently impacting the Food Bank's service population.

Castillo has stewarded the Food Bank's $20 million annual operating budget, overseeing major multi-million-dollar infrastructure improvements to the Food Bank's facilities, guiding the nonprofit's daily finances and operations, supporting major fundraising campaigns, and providing executive leadership to lead the Food Bank's five-year strategic plan.

In 2017, Castillo was honored as one of the SDBJ's CFOs of the Year.

Prior to joining the Food Bank, Castillo served on several nonprofit boards and committees, including the board of directors for the El Futuro Credit Union, an organization that provides financial services for working families and those traditionally underserved by financial institutions.

“The Food Bank's board of directors greatly welcomes Casey's appointment as chief executive officer,” said San Diego Food Bank Board Chair Steve Bernstein. “Casey brings a breadth of knowledge and experience to this position.”

“The Food Bank continues to serve record numbers of individuals and families in need throughout San Diego County due to the lasting impacts of the pandemic and soaring inflation,” Bernstein added. “Casey is a huge asset to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank as evidenced by the nonprofit's highly effective and efficient deployment of its mission daily.”

Bernstein said Castillo “has demonstrated outstanding leadership -- and he possesses the vision to take the Food Bank into its next phase of growth.”

“It is an honor to be selected,” Castillo said. “The Food Bank is critical to the welfare of our community, serving individuals and families in need and the community's most vulnerable members – including seniors and children living in poverty who face the daily threat of hunger.”

Acknowledging that the Food Bank has played a “critical role” during the pandemic,” Castillo added: “We will continue our mission into the future as we face our current economic challenges and prepare for the future needs of the community.”

Castillo holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University, and a Master's in Business Administration from California State University, San Bernardino. He is a graduate of LEAD San Diego's Impact Program and the Fieldstone Foundation's Emerging Leaders Program.

Established in 1977, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is a critical component to the welfare of San Diego County, providing food to people in need, advocating for the hungry and educating the public about hunger-related issues.

Through a combination of programs and partnerships with over 400 San Diego County nonprofit charities, the Food Bank acts as a central repository and distribution point for donated food. In its 202021 fiscal year, the Food Bank distributed 60 million pounds of food to individuals, families and a network of nonprofit organizations that work to alleviate hunger throughout the county. ■
